How to apply

Candidates who are nationals of our donor countries can apply through their respective governments. Belgium and the Netherlands also sponsor candidates from other EU member states and countries with which they have bilateral development cooperation relations.

UNICEF’s JPO programme welcomes applications from individuals who meet the minimum requirements outlined below. Eligibility criteria to apply for a JPO position vary from country to country, and the most accurate information can be found on the specific donor government page. In general, however, applicants should have:

  • Citizenship of one of our donor countries. Nationals of other European Union countries as well as selected developing countries may also apply to be sponsored by the Netherlands or Belgium.
  • A maximum age of 32 years
  • A university degree equivalent to a Master’s Degree
  • At least two years of relevant work experience
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and preferably another UN official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish or Russian)
  • Computer literacy in standard software applications
  • A keen interest in the work of the United Nations in general and of UNICEF in particular, and a personal commitment to UNICEF’s mission and to the ideals of the UN Charter.
  • The ability to successfully interact with individuals with different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to learn, and to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
