Recruitment for UNICEF Leadership Positions, Multiple Duty Stations

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) is the world’s leading organization working for the rights of children in 190 countries around the world.

As part of the organization’s rotation and recruitment exercise for UNICEF  leadership positions, UNICEF seeks highly qualified candidates primarily for posts of Representatives, Directors and Deputy Directors serving in the field, as well as a limited number of senior posts in Headquarters duty stations. 

The specific positions are indicated below.

Eligibility to Apply: 

UNICEF is particularly looking for candidates with strengths in leadership, building partnerships, as well as managing and measuring results for children.  Candidates must have the ability to drive forward UNICEF’s programmatic goals, policies and strategies with respect to achieving the UN Reform and Millennium Development Goals.
(a)   Education: Advanced university degree in Social Sciences, Economics, Public Administration, International Relations, Business Administration, Public Health, Education or other fields related to the work of UNICEF.
(b)  Work Experience: Ten to thirteen years of progressively responsible managerial experience in international programmes.
(c) UNICEF Core Values and Competencies:

(d)  Ability to drive forward UNICEF programmatic goals, policies and strategies with respect to Millennium Developments Goals and UN Coherence, with a focus on results for children.
(e)  Languages: Fluency in English, and another UN language (fluency in French and Spanish are also required in French or Spanish speaking countries).  Knowledge of other local working languages is an asset.

VN-09-637 Director, Governance and Multilateral Affairs, New York, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
• Promote the strategic positioning of UNICEF by directing, coordinating and monitoring  UNICEF involvement with the United Nations including UN inter-agency, intergovernmental and related  bodies; the Bretton Woods institutions; regional development  banks; and relevant ad hoc bodies.
• Lead the development and implementation of a strategic approach to UNICEF's engagement in UN coherence and UN reform. In collaboration with related divisions, establish priorities and provide overall guidance and direction on UN coherence to ensure a co-ordinated and pro-active engagement that links HQ, regional and country level actions.
• Ensure that UNICEF is abreast of key trends and developments related to other multilateral bodies which have a bearing on UN reform and/or UNICEF (G-8; G-20, etc), as well as international financial institutions; work with other related HQ entities to ensure UNICEF engagement to promote children's issues.
• Ensure timely and relevant analyses of geo-political issues, key regional/global trends and developments, and ensure that the organisation is duly informed of these. Work closely with regional and country offices to ensure the effective flow of communication regarding global developments and regional/country level response for a comprehensive organisational understanding and engagement across the various fora.
• To advise and support the UNICEF Executive Office and other staff in relation to policy-issues that has inter-agency implications and provide advice and ensure organizational coherence in the management of UNICEF-relations with the Permanent Missions of member states.
• Ensure that the UNICEF Executive Board is well supported in its governance responsibilities of UNICEF.
• Ensure effective management of GMA and to keep UNICEF staff advised on inter-agency and reform issues, as appropriate.

• Directs and manages the organization's global financial, budget and accounting operations and participate in senior management decision-making and performance evaluation processes, to support achievement of organizational goals and objectives.

VN-09-636 Director, Office of Internal Audit, New York, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
• Provides UNICEF management in the field and at headquarters with an objective and analytical evaluation of management systems, controls and operations, and presents recommendations as to how they can be improved. Increases the awareness amongst all levels of professional staff as well as the appreciation for controls, financial systems, policies and procedures to increase the effectiveness and the efficiency of UNICEF operations.

VN-09-638 Director, Private Fundraising and Partnerships, Geneva, SWITZERLAND
• Develops and leads a global strategy to mobilize private financial, political and organizational resources for children in selected country offices through a strategic partnership with National Committees, and corporate and civil society partners.
• Advises and assists the Executive Director and the Deputy Executive Directors on matters relating to global policy formulation and implementation under the broad policy guidelines as determined by the Executive Board.
• Leads the annual meetings of National Committees and the Standing Group, and serves as a member of the Global Management Team (GMT), which is headed by the Executive Director.
